PORTUGUESE POLICE yesterday arrested a member of ETA wanted since 2003.
Andoni Zengotitabengoa was arrested during a routine check of documentation at Lisbon airport as the ETA member attempted to board a flight to South America. According to Portuguese police, their suspicions were first raised when they realised Sr Zengotitabengoa’s documents were false
He had been on the run in Portugal since February when a cache of 1,500 kilos of explosives was discovered at a flat in the Portuguese capital used by ETA as a bomb-making factory.
Although Zengotitabengoa managed to escape when police raided the flat, he was linked to the bomb-making factory via receipts found at the scene. One of the receipts was for one euro’s worth of screw hooks and included information on the time and place of purchase. Police were then able to review the shop’s security cameras and identify Zengotitabengoa.
It is suspected Zengotitabengoa was attempting to flee to the Venezuelan capital, Caracas. It comes 12 days after Spanish judge, Eloy Velasco, accused the Venezuelan government of aiding ETA and harbouring their members, an accusation that provoked angry rebuttals from Venezuelan leader, Hugo Chavez.
