THE EX-MAYOR OF A VALENCIA TOWN imprisoned for charging money to allow illegal houses to be built was freed on bail yesterday.
The former mayor of Lliber (Valencia), Jose Mas, was imprisoned last December after it was proved he had received money in exchange for allowing 300 villas to be built illegally in the municipality between 1999 and 2003. He was freed yesterday on a bail of 6,000 euros.
Although the judge in charge of the case ruled that Sr Mas should be imprisoned without possibility of bail, the court has now accepted an appeal launched by the defence in which it requested Sr Mas be released on bail for “humanitarian reasons” given that the former mayor is elderly and the possibility of his fleeing the country is minimal.
The promoter of the illegal villas, Miguel Muntaner, who paid Sr Mas bribes of 3,000 euros for each of the illegal homes, was also freed on bail of 100,000 euros.
The majority of the houses in the case were sold to British buyers who were unaware of the illegal status of the homes when they bought them. A municipal architect who accepted a 25,000 bribe from Sr Muntaner was also freed on 100,000 euro bail. A total of 18 people were involved in the scandal.
