Marks and Spencer, the British department store, has ventured back into the Spanish market with the opening of its first 1,400 square meter department store in Marbella.
The company sold off its 9 Spanish operations eight years ago to El Corte Ingles after struggling to make a profit. Distracted by a major overhaul of its core British market, it decided to sell off its European stores.
The new store is a franchise operated by York Marbella, which operates the Gibralter branch of M&S. It is located in Marbella's La Cañada commercial centre just off the motorway.
The store is backed by the main UK operation, which has said that the Marbella store is a "toe in the water" before committing itself to a larger expansion across Spain's Costas. The new store will sell M&S brand clothes and goods, with the exception of food.
However, M&S has refused to comment on any further expansion plans across Spain until next year. M&S has 600 stores across the UK and 285 across the rest of the world.
