Mayor Candido Trabálon (Partido Andalucista) of Zurgena, who was charged with permitting illegal building of homes in his municipality during "Operacion Costurero" last year, is facing eight months in jail and a seven year inhabilitation from holding public office.
The announcement came as the Public Prosecutor pressed charges against Mayor Trabálon and 24 other people, in 13 seperate court cases.
The Mayor's number two, Manuel Tijeras, who was councillor in charge of urban planning, is facing similar charges.
The Mayor was arrested in 2008 in a huge police crackdown that opened the whole "urban abuse" scandal in Almería. A number of leading promotors, builders and politicians in local towns were also arrested in Operacion Costurero (operation sewing box).
The charges have been laid in front of Judge David Villagrá. Charges of abuse of office, forgery, urban abuse, bribery and receiving bribes have all been laid against the men involved, and were accepted last April 2009. The public prosecutor has since been building the case and has now laid charges in front of the judge, asking for a trial to be held.
A number of local politicians from the PSOE, PP and PA have all been charged in the case.
