A MOTHER who abandoned her new-born daughter next to a rubbish bin in Almeria city claimed she did so for fear of her family.
Thirty-two-year-old Moroccan, Hadifa Rajba said during her trial yesterday: “I abandoned my daughter for fear of my family, which is very violent. If they had discovered I had had a child out of wedlock, they would have killed me.”
Events began on January 31, 2008 when Sra Rajba left the Torrecardenas hospital with her aunt after giving birth. No sooner had she left the hospital though, she abandoned the child wrapped in a blanket inside a brown plastic bag.
Luckily, the child was found by a 20-year-old man who noticed movement among the rubbish bags. After rescuing the infant he called emergency services and the child’s life was saved.
Sra Rajba denies having left the chid to die. She said she wrapped her daughter in a bin liner to “protect her from the cold” and that she was “keeping watch from a short distance away to make sure no dogs hurt her”. Sra Rajba claims that when she saw the young man find the child, she left the scene.
She said the decision to leave the child beside a rubbish container was due to “desperation”. She said: “When I left the hospital I did not know what to do. I was wandering around with the child in my arms, crying.”
The prosecution in the case is asking for a sentence of 14 years, as well as a 30,000 euro indemnity for damages caused to the child.
