albox_rubbish_bin.jpgThe Guardia civil in Albox are investigating the appearence of a human body in the Albox waste processing plant in the Poligono Norte of Albox.

Workers sounded the alarm this morning when one of them spotted a human leg sticking out of a compacted pile of rubbish that had been delivered for sorting.

Managers at the plant stopped work and alerted the police at 8,30 am.

The pile was being moved by a crane, known as a "pulpo" (octopus) when a worker spotted the human limb.

Guardia Civil units and the Judicial Police, under the orders of a Judge, examined the pile, and discovered that the entire body had been delivered and put through the compacter.

Police have refused to speculate on whether the person was alive when put into the compacter.

The mayor of Albox, José García, explained that the plant receives domestic rubbish from the entire Almanzora catchment area, some 42 villages.

Refuse lorries pick up the rubbish from the ubiquitous green bins located throughout the area, before compacting the rubbish inside the lorries to save space.

The lorries then dump the rubbish at the treatment plant, which then sorts the rubbish for burning, recycling or dumping.

Judicial Police have removed all parts of the body for an autopsy.

The Delegate of the Government in Almería has said that a preliminary check showed the body to be of a male.

The refuse plant is expected to be allowed to restart work tomorrow morning.
